Abstract
The status of the English language in Nigeria as the language of instruction, and that of the Use of English as a service course in tertiary institutions such as Colleges of Education (COEs) is a well-established linguistic phenomenon. This study evaluated the Use of English Programme and its implementation in selected Colleges of Education in Southwestern Nigeria. Stratified random sampling technique was used to select six colleges of education based on ownership (federal, state and private). Twenty-four lecturers teaching Use of English (USE) in NCE Part III were selected using total enumeration sampling technique. One hundred NCE Part III students were selected from each college using purposive sampling technique due to their exposure to the Use of English (USE) courses. Results showed that the Use of English course objectives, contents and resources in the selected colleges of education are appropriate vis-a-vis Minimum Standard for General Education Studies). However, the usage of computer based test as a means of assessment is not common to all the colleges. The study recommends that lecturers should take into consideration in their choice of delivery method, the need for varied learning experiences to achieve conceptual knowledge, skills and attitudes for professional competencies of the teacher-trainees.
