ABSTRACT
This study investigated negative influence of social networks on students’ reading habit. The sample was drawn using purposive sampling technique to select one hundred (100) students in College of Education Demonstration Secondary School, Ikere Ekiti. The instrument used for the study was a self-designed questionnaire which was administered personally by the researchers. Three questions were raised and three hypotheses formulated. The analysis was done using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The hypotheses were tested at 0. 05 level of significance. The findings show that there is no significant relationship between (i) students’ interest in social network sites and reading; (ii) other forms of entertainment and reading (iii) motivation towards using social media and reading. Based on the findings of this study it has been observed that many students have more interest in using social networking sites than reading. Thus, the study recommends that teachers should be encouraged by the curriculum planners to use a quality and specific reading instruction in order to make reading as interesting and entertaining as possible; and that positive attitude and perception towards reading should be reactivated in students such that they would see reading as an enjoyable and purposeful venture.
