ABSTRACT

This study explores the interpersonal resource of attitude in the online discussions of some undergraduate students in a Nigerian University. Using the theoretical model of appraisal theory developed by White, Martin and Rose (Martin 2000; Martin and Rose 2003; Martin and White 2005), we intend to examine how students deploy the resources of attitudinal meaning in their discussion of specific topics in the forum. Data will be sourced from the learning site of the university under consideration for proper linguistic analysis. The aim of the study is to see the pragmatic implications of this deployment to the teaching of writing in ESL and ESP.
