ABSTRACT
This study examines the effect of appropriacy and usage of concord among non-English language teachers in Ondo West, Nigeria. Sample query, Sub-objective tests and natural discourse of randomly selected twenty teachers of various science and technical background from the five secondary schools are examined to ascertain their effective and appropriate application of concord in English. Data were collected from query, test and natural discourse of the target group. This covered their written/spoken competence in concord usage. The data were descriptively analysed using simple percentage to determine the extent of the appropriateness and inappropriateness of the concord usage ability. It is discovered that the group are inadequate in the concord usage and application thereby hampering their effectiveness and competence in English grammar. This therefore points to the need for expanded tertiary institutions’ curriculum in English, and the enforcement of a certificate grade as pre-requisite for graduation and employment for all students of tertiary institutions. While, in-service training should be organized for serving teachers, at frequent intervals, to facilitate effective communication, since it is the language of instruction.
